D-Day Memorial AnalysisToward the beginning of the design education, my studio studied memorial landscapes and how they responded to what was being memorialized. I chose the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France, honoring the fallen from the D-Day invasion in 1944. One of the key elements to the design was the location: it is located on a cliff, overlooking Omaha Beach, one of the bloodiest and most costly landing point in the Allied invasion. The shear number of white crosses that dot the landscape, and structures that emulate valor and sacrifice also make a significant impact to the memorial. This was also one of my first attempts at creating a successful digital rendering and one of my favorites to this day. Main focus in this drawing was showing before and after, black and white vs color, based on the events that took place and the effects it had both on the landscape and psychological impacts it had on the Allied and Axis veterans.
